Kumalu is an island located in the habitat of the Saramaccan
community, along the Pikin Rio in southern direction of the Suriname
River. Accessible as follows: a journey of approximately 3.5 hours
per bus to Atjonie, then approximately 3.5 hours sailing per motorboat.
Kumalu is also accessible by airplane from Zorg en Hoop, a flight
of approximately 1 hour. Day
1
Paramaribo – Atjonie – Kumalu
The journey brings you from the Afobakka road to Atjoni (Pokigron)
where you will embark on a motorboat. Along the way we will make
several stops at the rapids and other places worth seeing along
the river. We have lunch in the boat and stay overnight at Kumalu,
which is our destination.
Day 2
The second day starts with a walk through the village with a visit
to the Great Chief of the Saramaccan, Granman Songo Aboikonie, in
his residence, provided that he is present. We continue by viewing
woodcarvings which you can also buy. Upon return on the island we
have lunch and afterwards you can enjoy your own activities. After
the break we take a short trip to Tapawatraval (rapid) where you
can swim
and have your body massaged by the strong current of the river.
After dinner we go across to Bendekondre for the cultural dance.
(Provided that the village people are busy with certain cultural
activities where strangers are not allowed, the cultural evening
will be held at Kumalu.) Hereafter we cross again for the overnight
stay.
Day 3
Kumalu –
Atjonie – Paramaribo
Breakfast, pack bags, settle up and depart.
This journey does not differ much from day 1 except for
the fact that we go with the stream in northern direction. We have
lunch in the boat.
Day 3
You will be transported with motorboat to Tapawatra rapid, where
the boat shall be dragged along the rapid, to further continue our
journey to the tremendous Grandan rapid. At the Grandan you can
picnic and swim eventually fish and explore other kind of water
recreation.
After returning to the island we take a short break. After the break
you can swim at Kumalu. Short evaluation with the guests. After
dinner: Story Night.
Day 4
Kumalu – Atjonie – Paramaribo
Breakfast, pack bags, settle up and depart.
This journey does not differ much from day 1 except for the fact
that we go with the stream in northern direction. We have lunch
in the boat.
Day 4
Per motorboat we take a short crossing to Bendekondre. We walk through
the village, to the forest where we will visit and expose their
farming land.
Upon return to the island we have lunch and then we have a break.
After the break you can swim on the island. To close the tour there
will be a barbecue night and dance.
Day 5
Kumalu – Atjonie – Paramaribo
Breakfast, pack bags, settle up and depart.
